Launch of Design Week 2010 : Thomas Heatherwick. The Launch of Design Week 2010 : Thomas Heatherwick is part of Design Week .
The launch of Design Week 2010 takes place on Monday 2 November, with a talk from the acclaimed international designer Thomas Heatherwick.
Thomas founded his eponymous studio in 1994 to make unique design projects happen. Today the practice operates from a combined studio and workshop in King's Cross, London, where a team of architects, designers and makers work on projects ranging from bridges and buildings to products and large-scale works of art.
This is an environment where project management and implementation takes place in parallel with model-making, prototyping and experimentation with ideas, materials and manufacturing processes.
The studio's work includes La Maison Unique in New York, the world flagship store for luxury French brand Longchamp, and the multi-award-winning East Beach Cafe, a seafront restaurant in Littlehampton, on the south coast of England. Current projects include a monastic building in Sussex and the British Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo in 2010.
Since its inception, the studio's work has been recognized through a number of awards, and its work is widely published and exhibited around the world.
Thomas is an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA and a Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Art. He is the recipient of honorary doctorates from four British universities: Sheffield Hallam, Brighton, Dundee and Manchester Metropolitan. He has won the Prince Philip Designers Prize, and in 2006 was the youngest practitioner to be appointed a Royal Designer for Industry.
Thomas is a member of the Bombay Sapphire Foundation, which was established in 2001 to recognize, encourage and reward the very best in contemporary design. The members of the Foundation include leading international designers and some of the world's most respected figures from the glass and design industry.
At the launch event, Thomas will treat guests to an insight into his diverse and fascinating career, and speak about his work with the Bombay Sapphire Foundation and current and upcoming projects.
